Current question:
Starting an eco business

Q: I want to start eco-business; where can I get education or information? Thank you. -- Peter

A: That's great, and you're in good company -- no pun intended. More and more, businesses are seeing not only social benefits, but economic benefits, of going "green."

If you haven't already, start with basic business resources such as the Small Business Administration, Florida Department of State and Florida Small Business Development Center Network, where you'll find information on doing business in Florida. You'll also want to check with your city and county for any licenses you might need.

Then, depending on the kind of eco business you are interested in, check out a few resources:

If you are interested in nature travel/ecotourism, look into the Florida Master Naturalist Program to earn certificates in Florida ecology. Also look for local ecotourism certification programs that might be offered in your area, such as the Society for Ethical Ecotourism in Southwest Florida.

You may also want to search for business consultants that specialize in environment-related or sustainable businesses. And within your eco specialty, you may find organizations/associations that are dedicated to the kind of business you want to be in.

Another important aspect of your search for information and education is networking. Join local, statewide or even national groups related to your specialty to meet people and share information -- it could lead to your big break.

These are just a few things to think about and get you started -- good luck!
