Q: I am an expert canoeist and backpacker. I want to paddle for about 5 days in the Everglades. I don't need or want a guide. Where can I rent a canoe, and where are some unique places off the beaten path to go? I appreciate any information you can give me. -- Jon Stockdill
A: The places I know of near the Everglades that rent canoes are North American Canoe Tours in Everglades City near the western entrance of the park, Everglades International Hostel in Homestead outside the eastern entrance of the park and Florida Bay Outfitters in Key Largo south of the park. Inside Everglades National Park is Flamingo Lodge Marina & Outpost Resort.
As for off-the-beaten-path routes in Everglades backcountry, I would suggest reading A Paddler's Guide to Everglades National Park and talking to whoever ends up renting you the canoe. I'm not as familiar with all the backcountry areas.
I know you're an expert, but if you haven't already, take a look at the Everglades National Park backcountry Web site information, which includes how to get a permit for your trip and where you can camp.
Have an adventure, Jon!
