Q: Hi. I'm looking for a primitive camping (no bathrooms or electricity) site near the Orlando area (or within 90 miles). Also, I need to find a place that you have to hike 7 miles to get to the campsite. I'm having a little trouble finding those requirements. I'm going on this trip for my backpacking class. Thanks -- Rana
A: You really must respond and let us know more about this backpacking class, Rana! I'm surprised you weren't offered any ideas in the class.
State forests are a good choice for what you're looking for. Try Lake Wales Ridge State Forest to the south or Seminole State Forest to the north.
You'll also want to check out sections of the National Scenic Florida Trail. From this page, you can click on an Orlando-area section and find out about the backcountry campsites along the trail. You may hike the trail without being a member, but only members may hike sections of the trail that are on private property.
People looking for central Florida backcountry will also want to check out the book by EcoFlorida hiking columnist and nature writer Sandra Friend, 50 Hikes in Central Florida: Hikes, Walks and Backpacks in the Heart of the Peninsula.
Let us know more about that class . . . .
