Diving in Florida

Q: I am thinking about staying in Florida for some time, during which I would like to do some inexpensive (shore) dives. Any suggestions? -- Thank you, Fred Provost

A: Diving is great in Florida, Fred. To tell the truth, I'm not certified yet -- I hope to make the time to take a class someday -- so I had to do some research for you.

The coastal diving is probably best in the Keys. The water is warm, and there are beautiful coral reefs (which I've seen when snorkeling). I'd highly recommend John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

I'd also like to make the following suggestions for other parts of Florida:

  • Northwestern Florida: Dixie Divers in Panama City Beach, 888-723-4943
  • Central Florida: Discover Diving Dive Center in Daytona Beach, 904-760-3483 or Scuba Haven Dive Center in Tampa, 813-972-4455
  • Southeastern Florida: Adventure Scuba Diving & Watersports in Miami, 305-949-1194 or Sunstar Aquatic Services in Deerfield Beach, 561-368-9952

You also might want to check out the Florida Scuba Connection , a basic site about diving throughout the state. At this page, you can make requests about where and when you want to dive, and boat operators will respond to you.

And if you're into history, check out Florida’s Underwater Archeological Preserves site, which lists shipwreck sites around the state.

Happy diving!
