Q: Is there anywhere to kayak in John Pennekamp State Park, or do we just take the sailing and snorkeling tours? If you can kayak, where should we go and who would we contact? -- Sincerely, Gretchen Gerfen
A: I haven't done it there, but I'm sure the kayaking is great in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Gretchen.
While most people probably visit John Pennekamp to snorkel the reefs and go fishing, there are more than 2 miles of paddling trails among the park's mangroves, and I imagine you could take to the more open waters if you're experienced in sea kayaking, which is another popular water-based activity throughout the Florida Keys.
Just visit the concession in the park for info on all its tours and boat rentals, or visit an independent Web site on John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
