Long Key State Park snorkeling

Q: We want to go snorkeling / beach camping in the Keys sometime this spring. On the advice of a co-worker, I am considering Long Key State Park. Can you tell me if this is a good choice and offer any information about what we will find there? Thanks -- Frank Pardus

A: Well, Frank, you have a good co-worker there. Long Key State Park is a good choice for snorkeling and beach camping. There are ancient coral reefs, which, of course, make for good snorkeling.

You can also hike the Golden Orb trail, named after a spider. (The golden orb spider looks scary, but it won't hurt you.) And a self-guided canoe trail will take you around the area.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is another Florida state park in the Keys that is good for snorkeling. In fact, many snorkelers visit the park to see the underwater statue "Christ of the Deep." It's not as far down as Long Key, but you can bet it will be busier, as it's the most visited of all the Florida state parks.

Have a great trip!
