Playing in the Water on Florida's Nature CoastQ: I would like to know more about swimming, snorkeling, canoeing and kayaking options in the Crystal River / Homosassa Springs area. Thanks! -- Ray Fritsch A: You know how to pick 'em, Ray. This area is known as Florida's "Nature Coast" and "Mother Nature's Theme Park," so you can imagine what to expect. Beauty! The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge in Crystal River are good bets. The Chassahowitzka NWR is 31,000 acres of water sanctuary -- being right on the Gulf of Mexico -- so you can swim, snorkel and paddle to your heart's content. Canoe / kayak rentals are available in some spots, such as the Chassahowitzka River Campground and Recreation Area (352-382-2200), a county park. Motor boating and fishing are popular here, so if you want to snorkel, stake out a spot away from the boats. The Crystal River NWR, like Chassahowitzka, is a water sanctuary and is accessible only by boat. Manatees, river otters and many birds are protected in these refuges, and you are likely to see them, especially in the winter months. If you're interested in a tour, try Fun 2 Dive or Birds Underwater for snorkeling and diving. For kayak tours, contact Homosassa Kayak & Expedition Company. Many tours focus on manatee interactions because people just love these ugly-but-cute endangered marine mammals. Manatees are gentle giants, but it may not be a good idea to snuggle up to them in the water. Wildlife have been shown to have an increased heart rate for up to an hour after coming in contact with people -- indicating stress. Respect all wild animals, and give them their space. Have a natural trip! Do you have a question? Contact the editor. |
