Northwestern Florida -- known to some as either the Panhandle or the Emerald Coast -- is generally laid-back and friendly. You'll find most of the typical tourist attractions and crowds along the coast, but most of the area is made up of quiet forests or farms and small towns.
You'll find a lot of nature-travel opportunities here, especially in and around the Apalachicola National Forest southwest of Tallahassee (the state capital) and the many bays. Northwestern Florida is different from the rest of the Florida in that it boasts the highest point above sea level in the state and even has tall bluffs you won't find in other parts of Florida.
